The light we get from the Sun is purely from the heated surface. The surface, by itself, does not generate light. Just like the stove element, by itself, does not generate light. It is the heat that causes it toglow red.
The energy from the fusion at the centre of the Sun is transported to the surface by convection cells (not by photons of light). The heatraises the surface temperature to 5770 K (9900 F) which causes it to appear yellowish white (pure white would be around 6000 K = 10,300 F).
An incadescent light bulb (an ordinary light bulb) glows because the filament is heated to 2800 K (4600 F) by the electrical current. That is why light bulbs are very hot.

It depends what the material is made of. Metals tend to glow when heated to extreme temperatures. Most other things just catch fire and burn or just melt without changing colors.
True. Use the spectrum to guage the temperature. Red hot isn't near as hot as white hot or blue hot.
